Orihuela is a large typically Spanish town, in Alicante province, in the Autonomous Community of
Valencia, in south-eastern Spain. Orihuela lies in the fertile Vega del Segura, northeast of Murcia city.

The Moors left a remarkable irrigation system, still used today for local agriculture. The effectiveness
of this system resulted in the proverb "rain or no rain, corn in Orihuela." The major local produce
includes oranges, lemons, potatoes, pepper, hemp, cotton, corn, oats, wheat,
almonds and dates, and it is also famous for its carnations.
A pre-Roman settlement, it became the Roman Orcelis. Captured by the Moors in 713, it was finally
liberated by the Christians in 1264. The town was sacked during the disturbances at the beginning
of the reign of Charles I and again in the War of the Spanish Succession in 1706.
The old part of the town is north of the River Segura, the new part on the south. Its many
historic buildings include the 14th century cathedral, the Church of Santiago (formerly a mosque,
and rebuilt in the 18th century), the 14th century Church of Santas Justa y Rufina, with an 18th-century
facade, and the College of Santo Domingo, the former university. There is also a diocesan museum of sacred art.
